What is LVT flooring?

LVT is an abbreviation for Luxury Vinyl Tile. This flooring mimics the look of materials such as wood and stone, but is actually made from multiple layers of PVC. Tools You’ll Need

Tools You’ll Need

Laying LVT flooring requires a few tools to ensure the job is done right first time:

Utility knife – For cutting LVT planks or tiles to fit.
Tape measure – Ensures accurate cuts and layout.
Pencil & chalk line – For marking cutting lines and alignment.
Straight edge or ruler – Helps with precise cutting.
Rubber mallet – Used to secure click-lock LVT planks in place.
Tapping block & pull bar – Essential for fitting planks snugly together.
Spirit level – Ensures the subfloor is even before installation.

Preparing for Fitting LVT

Proper preparation is key to achieving flawless LVT flooring installation. Before laying your new floor, you must prepare your subfloors and acclimatise the LVT.  A well-prepared subfloor prevents issues like uneven planks, gaps or lifting over time.

Step 1: Acclimatise Your LVT

Acclimatising your LVT flooring means allowing it to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room before installation. LVT expands and contracts with changes in climate, so failing to acclimatise it properly can lead to gaps or an uneven finish.

Place the unopened packs flat in the room where you plan to install for at least 24-48 hours. Ensure the room is at a stable temperature (between 18-27°C) and avoid exposing the flooring to extreme heat or cold.

Step 2: Clean the Subfloor

Cleaning and levelling the subfloor is essential before laying LVT flooring. Any dust, debris or uneven surfaces can affect how well the planks or tiles adhere.

Start by sweeping and vacuuming the entire area to remove dirt and dust. For any sticky residues or old adhesive, use a damp mop or a mild cleaning solution to wipe them away. Lastly, ensure the subfloor is completely dry before fitting the LVT.

LVT Underlay: Why it Matters

LVT flooring underlay is the layer you install on the subfloor before laying the LVT down. It provides extra support, improves durability, increases longevity and enhances the overall feel underfoot.

Why Do You Need LVT Underlay?

  • Smooths imperfections
  • Reduces noise by absorbing sound
  • Improves underfoot comfort
  • Enhances insulation

Choosing the Right LVT Underlay

Not all underlays are suitable for LVT flooring, you’ll need a specific LVT underlay. The thickness is usually 1-2 mm and made of foam.

Lay the underlay perpendicular to the direction you’ll lay flooring. If it includes a moisture barrier, ensure it faces downward..

Laying the LVT Flooring

Now that you’ve completed the necessary preparation steps, it’s time to start fitting your LVT.

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Before you start installing, use your tape measure and pencil to mark your starting point. A straight edge or ruler will help you create precise guidelines for an even finish.

Step 2: Cutting the LVT

Measure and mark each plank as needed, then use your utility knife to score and snap them to size. We recommend double-checking your measurements before cutting to reduce waste.

Step 3: Installing the First Row

Start in one corner, laying the first row along the longest wall. If you’re using click-lock LVT, fit the planks together by angling them and pressing down until they lock in place.

Step 4: Securing the Planks

To ensure a snug fit, gently tap the LVT together using your tapping block and rubber mallet.

Step 5: Levelling

As you go along, use your spirit level to check that your flooring is even. If you notice any raised edges, adjust them before moving forward to prevent gaps.
