How to Clean a Mattress – A Step by Step Guide

By Colourbank on February 18th, 2022

It’s likely that you haven’t given much thought to how to clean a mattress. Read on to find out why it’s something you shouldn’t overlook. We are all looking for money saving tips at the moment, and one of the best ways to make the pounds go further is to take care of and maintain the things you already have. Keeping up to date with repair jobs and deep cleaning means your house, and the things in it, will last longer. And there’s no exception when it comes to your mattresses. Knowing how to clean a mattress could save you money in the longer term.

Without going into too much detail, your mattress is a great carrier of dust, dead skin cells, oil and sweat. Dust mites find this environment inviting, and you may notice stains and odours from your mattress when you change the bedding. Replacing your mattress when it is no longer supportive or comfortable is a must, but you can avoid having to invest in a new one too soon by following a few simple steps for cleaning mattresses.

Cleaning mattresses

Knowing how to clean a mattress effectively will ensure you avoid unwanted odours and stains from spoiling your sleep. Let’s take a look at some of the methods you can employ when cleaning mattresses.

1. Start by stripping the bed and vacuuming the surface, preferably with the upholstery attachment. Be sure to get into all the dips and dents of the mattress.

2. Rotate the mattress or flip it over, to avoid sagging and loss of support in some areas.

3. Open a window or two to allow your mattress to benefit from some fresh air.

4. Check for stains and odours and prioritise these areas for spot cleaning. Then check the label on your mattress before applying cleaning products, and you’re good to go.

5. Now you have a freshly vacuumed surface to work with, and you’ve identified the areas of concern, it’s time to add some elbow grease. Not too much though! You don’t want to spread the stain further. Start by applying water, using a clean cloth, to the area. Adding bicarbonate of soda at this stage will give the water some extra oomph, without having to add any harsh chemicals. Leave the area for 30 minutes or so after application, then dab again with a fresh wet cloth to clear away any residue from the bicarbonate of soda.

6. If you find yourself dealing with a more stubborn stain or odour, it may be time to seek out an upholstery cleaning product. In order to avoid damaging the surface of the mattress it’s a good idea to dilute the solution and apply it using a sponge, rather than directly onto the mattress. Remember, mattresses are not waterproof. Applying a product in too large a quantity, directly onto the surface could result in a damp smell if the mattress cannot dry out properly.

It’s good to know how to clean a mattress effectively, but it’s also a good idea to protect it as soon as you start to use it. Then you can be sure to get the most out of your mattress, and continue to enjoy a restful night’s sleep for years to come.
